Having Loved His Own

John 13 opens the door to the Upper Room and lets us listen to the beating heart of Jesus. In one breathtaking sentence—“having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end” (John 13:1)—John shows us the nature of Christ’s love (eternal, incarnate, unchanging), the objects of His love (“His own,” given by the Father, redeemed by the Son, born of the Spirit), and the extent of His love (to the end, to the uttermost, to perfection). Come behold the Savior whose hour had come—and yet whose thoughts were filled, not with Himself, but with His people. Let His invincible love steady your soul and stir you to joyful, sacrificial love in return.
