July 2024 Recommended Reads
Dear Saints,
Each month, I make recommendations of books that I hope will be a blessing to your walk with the Lord. One thing I’ve learned through this process is that too many recommendations can be overwhelming, so I’ve shortened the list to a few good reads you might enjoy.
Also, you may benefit from this video in which Iain Murray speaks about how and why to read books well.
Devotional: At General Assembly, I picked up a copy of Ian Hamilton’s devotional on Psalm 23 entitled Our Heavenly Shepherd. Few people can connect God’s Word with the experience of life as well as Dr. Hamilton. I’m excited to dig into this book while on vacation later this month!
Theology (but also very devotional!): The Holiness of God by RC Sproul. In this classic work, Dr. Sproul sets before us the Scriptures teaching on the God whom the angels worship as “Holy, Holy, Holy.” There is also an outstanding video series that goes along with this book, which can be accessed for free here.
Worth a Listen: Do you have five minutes each day that you can set aside for your heart to be stirred by faithful teaching? Then dear ones, make a habit of listening to Sinclair Ferguson’s wonderful podcast, “Things Unseen.”
Kids: This month, I’m not suggesting one specific book, but rather a publisher. Christian Focus Publishing produces outstanding children’s material, which are not only well written but beautifully illustrated. We will have several Christian Focus children’s books available this month for purchase. Of particular note is that they are one of very few publishers who do not use images of Jesus in their children’s books.
As always, while I recommend these books, it doesn’t mean that I recommend everything in all of these books. Always read with discernment, that your soul may be nurtured and grow in the Lord Jesus.
With love in Christ, dear saints-
Alex Mark
